Frequently Asked Questions

What is the tourist tax (imposta di soggiorno) in Italy?

The tourist tax (imposta di soggiorno) is a local municipal charge applied to overnight stays in Italian accommodation, including privately rented holiday villas. Each municipality independently sets its own rate, exemption thresholds, and maximum taxable nights. The revenue funds local tourism infrastructure and services.

Who has to pay the tourist tax?

All adult guests staying in a holiday villa are required to pay the tourist tax. Children are often exempt, though the minimum age threshold varies by municipality – typically between age 6 and age 17 depending on local regulation. Italian residents and guests with certain medical conditions may also qualify for exemptions under specific municipal rules. The conditions column in the tables above shows the age threshold for each municipality.

When and how is the tourist tax paid?

The tourist tax is generally paid in cash in euros upon arrival, directly at the villa. It is not included in the rental price quoted by Northitaly Villas (unless otherwise specified) and cannot be paid in advance or by bank transfer. Please ensure you bring sufficient cash to cover the full amount for all eligible guests for the entire stay.

Is there a maximum number of nights for which the tax applies?

Yes – many municipalities cap the tourist tax at a maximum number of consecutive taxable nights, typically between 3 and 30 nights depending on location. Stays longer than this threshold are only taxed up to the cap; additional nights are exempt. The specific maximum for each municipality is shown in the conditions column of the tables above.

Where can I find the exact rates and conditions for a specific municipality?

The terms, conditions, and latest pricing can be found on the official website of the relevant municipality. Simply search online for “Comune” followed by the name of the municipality (for example: “Comune Stresa” or “Comune Bellagio”) and browse the municipal website to consult the most up-to-date rates. Please note that most Italian municipal websites are published in Italian only.
